Exploring an invalidating upbringing
You have taken a very positive step by beginning therapy.
You are making space to tell, and make sense of, your story.
Remembering unpleasant events and becoming aware of feelings attached to those events can bring on strong feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, etc. Growth happens in relationship, and often times is accompanied by discomfort. The therapeutic relationship can be a guide for when to lean in to the discomfort, to understand or untangle it more, and when to give yourself space from the discomfort. I have a core belief for my work that patience, gentleness, and an awareness that things unfold and that people heal in their own time is critical to growth. It is an organic process, requiring a mindful eye to see the multitude of tiny changes happening at all times.
Attempting to force the story to be understood without looking at all it has to teach will have opposite effects than desired.
"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you." - Maya Angelou
